How to download Podcasts to the computer using iTunes!

This FAQ assumes you have an iTunes account, have iTunes on both your computer, and that you are signed in by default to the Music section of the store. I’ll illustrate the FAQ with a download of author Yuval Harari in conversation in the Econtalk podcast series.

Note:      To expand thumbnail images below to viewable size, click on the image the in the “cross-hammer” in the top right corner. Click “Esc” to return to thumbnail size.

Switch from the Music page in the iTunes store to the Podcast page.

Type “Yuval Harari Econtalk” into the search bar in the top right of the screen followed by clicking on the RETURN key.

Then CLICK on the Podcast provider, “EconTalk”.

SCROLL DOWN the page until you get to highlighted Harari episode. (At the time of writing, it is episode 44 but as episodes are added to the series, the episode number will increase.

  1. CLICK “Get” for the chosen episode (or more episodes if others are of interest. That’s it 🙂 . The podcast(s) should begin to download to an episode list in the Cloud in the background.
  2. The download process can be viewed at the top-middle of the page at “My Podcasts”.

If you are interested in all the offerings at EconTalk series and want the opportunity to see previous and future episodes, CLICK on “Subscribe” then CLICK the pop-up to confirm the subscription.

(Note that the episodes are listed on your computer but located in the Cloud i.e. not taking up much space your computer. They only take up space if you download from the cloud to listen when not on the connected to the internet).

If you want to check out all of Harari’s offerings, begin typing Yuval Harari into the search until you see his name, then click to  browse his books, podcasts, films, radio, songs etc.  This is OK if you want to follow Harari, but it will divert you from a specific search.

6.   In order to view information about all your subscriptions and episodes, and whether or not you have completed downloading or listening, as well as to manage synchronisation with devices, you will need to switch from the iTunes Store to the My Podcasts. To do this, just CLICK on the “My Podcasts” in the middle of the top of the iTunes page.

 6.   The  symbols on the “My Podcasts” page indicate

Blue Podcast Circle A half-filled blue circle – the episode has been downloaded and partly played but not completed.

Partially filled grey circle – the episode is still downloading – approximately 80% been complete – with shaded area at ’10 o’clock’.

White dashed empty circle – the episode has not yet started downloading

Cloud – the episodes is in the cloud – not taking significant computer space. DOUBLE-CLICK to download from the Cloud.

Grey crossed circle – CLICK to stop downloading to the computer – if you want to retain in the cloud.

Tick  The episode will be synchronised to an attached device – depending on synchronisation settings.

Expand  Close Expand/Close Image

When the only visible icon on the line is the tick, the episode has been downloaded and played to the end.
